Tulsa Public Schools Online Databases (Subscription Websites)

  • Nettrekker - This is a subscription search engine that finds free web sites for you. Free search engines (Google, Yahoo, Ask.com, etc.) provide you with worthless to excellent sites, and you have to sort through thousands/millions of hits to find the quality sites. Nettrekker just provides you with the quality sites. It saves you time. It's efficient. (Limitation of Nettrekker: If your search has nothing to do with the curriculum, Nettrekker may not cover it.)
  • Grolier Online Passport – enter the name of the country you wish to learn about
  • Culturegrams – World Edition provides country-specific information on everything from dating customs to economic development.
NOTE: Culturegrams has a “build your own table or graph” function that allows you to create a graph or table of urban population. (http://online.culturegrams.com/secure/world/data_tables.php) However there is no way to create a graph or table comparing urban vs. rural, only urban as a percentage of the total (there are also many other data available for graphing). I could not find any good graphic representations of this information online except for on an individual, country-by-country basis.

  • Discovering Collection – a basic search of a specific country. May pull up encyclopedia articles about that country, biographical articles of important people from that country, and/or articles about important historical events in that country
  • SIRS Discoverer – Click on the “Countries” button and select your country of interest to find profiles with a variety of information, including a brief chronology of important historical events from ancient to modern times
  • Student Research Center – search for articles and information from a variety of sources, including books, magazines, newspapers, etc. on issues, people, history, and other topics relevant to your country of interest
